Chronic Daily Headache in Taipei, Taiwan: Prevalence, Follow-Up and Outcome Predictors

Abstract: We conducted a two-stage population-based headache survey among subjects aged > or = 15 in Taipei, Taiwan. Subjects with chronic daily headache (CDH) in the past year were identified, interviewed and followed-up. CDH was defined as a headache frequency > 15 days/month, with a duration > 4 h/day. Of the 3377 participants, 108 (3.2%) fulfilled the criteria for CDH, with a higher prevalence in women (4.3%) than men (1.9%). TM was the most common subtype (55%), followed by CTTH (44%). Thirty-four per cent of the C… Show more

“…Nevertheless, after 4 years the relapse rate into drug overuse in our patients ranged around 60%, whereas Lu et al [40] found a 44% relapse rate into drug overuse after two years. It may not be so surprising considering that the relapse rate reported by Bigal et al [41] was 30% and that by Katsarava et al [34] was about 35% after only a oneyear follow-up, with an initial success rate of 97% in the Katsarava series vs. an initial success rate of 60% in our patients [39].…”

“…Lu et al [14] had found the frequency of chronic TTHA as 3.2% (1.9% in males and 4.3% in females). Takeshima et al [6] reported the frequency of episodic TTHA as 19.6% (14.7% in males and 23.7% in females), and the frequency of chronic TTHA as 2.1% (1.5% in males and 2.7% in females) [6].…”

“…In a population of 1883 subjects, 4,7% (89 patients) fulfilled the proposed criteria for CDH being 47,2% (42 patients) with CTTH and 50,6% (45 patients) with TM. Lu et al 13 found lower percentages. Among 3377 subjects, 108 (3,2%) fulfilled the proposed criteria for CDH, with a higher prevalence in women (4,3%) than in men (1,9%).…”

“…While the majority of the patients from clinic population studies present with CDH due to transformed migraine, CDH affects 3,2 to 4,3% of subjects from random population series 1,13,14 . Chronic tensiontype headache and TM are similarly prevalent reaching percentages around 50% for each of the groups.…”
