Chronic hyperplastic candidosis and secretor status

Abstract: A prospective study was undertaken of 22 patients with chronic hyperplastic candidosis and 50 age and sex matched individuals with no evidence of oral mucosal disease. Specifically the relationship between the inherited ability to secrete blood group antigens in saliva and chronic hyperplastic candidosis was investigated. The proportion of non-secretors of blood group antigens was significantly higher in patients with chronic hyperplastic candidosis (68%) compared to the control subjects (38%). The inability t… Show more

“…The presence of the epithelial antigen has a protective role in infections by interfering with the binding sites either on the surface of microorganisms or to epithelial cells. Studies have shown that infection is more common in non‐secretors . It has also been reported that individuals with blood‐group A have a predisposition for oral cancer.…”

“…Seto (1986)[16] and Lamey et al .,[17] have used Gram stain as a basic stain for microbial identification of Candida . Monheit[9] introduced the addition of CFW to PAP stain, without altering or destroying the diagnostic cytopathological features, while still allowing the fungi to be identified.…”
