Chronic Inflammation Is Associated With Low Physical Function in Older Adults Across Multiple Comorbidities

Abstract: Elevated CRP and IL-6 levels are associated with poorer physical function in older adults with various comorbidities, as assessed by a common battery of clinical assessments. Chronic subclinical inflammation may be a marker of functional limitations in older persons across several diseases/health conditions.

“…However, only those individuals aged 70-79 years who had completed the 7-year follow-up were included. These results could not be confirmed in more representative studies of the elderly (Verghese et al 2011;Brinkley et al 2009), including our findings (Legrand et al 2013). Despite the biological interactions, TNF-α was shown to be less stable than IL-6, and only weak correlations could be found between these markers (Verghese et al 2011) (Pearson r=0.12, p=0.012).…”

“…Consistent with our results, these previous studies reveal that increased IL-6 levels are independent of age, gender, race, body composition, and comorbidities associated with poorer physical function. Furthermore, Brinkley and coworkers showed, with standardized measures across multiple study populations, that these associations were consistent in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure (CHF), high cardiovascular risk, and selfreported disability (Brinkley et al 2009). …”

“…Contrary to the widely recognized role of chronic inflammation in driving sarcopenia and frailty (Brinkley et al 2009;Michaud et al 2013), we failed to confirm the detrimental effect of inflammatory biomarkers, even after taking into consideration the presence of chronic inflammatory conditions or immunosuppressant treatment, although this will need to be clarified in our Functional MBI (median, IQR) 100 (100-100) 100 (100-100) 0.534 100 (100-100) 100 (100-100) 0.746 iADL (median, IQR) 9 (9-9) 9 (9-9) 0.408 9 (9-9) 9 (9-9) 0.420 ongoing follow-up. Further, we failed to detect significant correlations between ABSI which is representative of adiposity and serum IL-6 levels.…”

“…Their immunolocalization increases in E 0 mice with age, whereas it was very low in control animals and in young (6 week old) E° mice. There is accumulating evidence that aging is associated with a pro-inflammatory shift in vascular phenotype (Csizar et al, 2007), kidney (Rodwell et al, 2004), liver (Coban et al, 2008) and heart (Brinkley et al, 2009). We must comment that the presence of IL-6 in epithelial cells could be odd, but this result is in agreement with other data suggesting its expression in progressive renal disease (Zhang et al, 2009) presented an increased expression of IL-6.…”
