Chronic Liver Disease among Alaska-Native People, 2003–2004

Abstract: This is the first known population-based study to examine the burden and etiology of CLD among AN people. Causes of CLD were similar among AI/AN people as those reported among other racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Identifying specific etiologies of CLD among populations can help target appropriate prevention and treatment strategies as they are specific to the causes of CLD.

“…Compared with non-Hispanic whites, Hispanic individuals have signifi cantly higher and nonHispanic blacks have signifi cantly lower prevalence of NAFLD ( 15,33 -35 ). Th e prevalence of NAFLD in American-Indian and The Diagnosis and Management of NAFLD Alaskan-Native populations appears lower, ranging from 0.6 to 2.2 % , although the lack of histologic defi nition makes it likely that is an underestimate ( 36,37 ). Th ere are data to suggest that hypothyroidism, hypopituitarism, hypogonadism, sleep apnea, and polycystic ovary syndrome independent of obesity are important risk factors for the presence of NAFLD ( Table 4 ) …”

“…National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys conducted between 1988 and 2008 in the USA showed that the prevalence of NAFLD has been increasing steadily, along with the prevalence of metabolic conditions [6]. Additionally, several studies have demonstrated that the prevalence of NAFLD differs with ethnicity [7][8][9][10].…”
