“…It has been recommended that for symptomatic treatment, L-dopa or 5-hydroxytryptophan may relieve some Parkinson type of syndromes such as lessened muscular tension during the course of drug application, yet the original signs recurred soon after discontinuation of the drugs. 9 To the best of our knowledge, this group is the first in the literature to demonstrate an effective treatment of severe Mn intoxication in humans by using antibacterial PAS. [18][19][20] More importantly, our 17-year follow-up study reported here clearly shows that PAS treatment not only significantly alleviates clinical symptoms and signs of manganism at the time of treatment, but appears also to have a beneficial prognostic effect.…”

“…Patients' symptoms, including disturbed rigor, muscle pain or cramps, sweating, fatigue, and anxiety, may be improved; however, most extrapyramidal syndromes in gait, rigidity, and writing remain unchanged. [9][10][11] Some investigators suggest that clinical progression in patients with manganese parkinsonism can continue even 10 years after cessation of exposure. 11 Recent evidence indicates that Mn intoxication may trigger a neurodegenerative process.…”

“…This type of effect may be more likely to occur in the elderly. By the oral route, manganese is often regarded as one of the least toxic elements, although there are several case reports of oral exposure to high doses of manganese that have described neurological impairment as an effect (ATSDR 2000b;Banta and Markesbery 1977;Bleich et al 1999;Holzgraefe et al 1986).…”

“…Although long‐term overexposure to Mn 2+ has been proven to be detrimental as it leads to Mn poisoning with the brain as a major compromised organ , research regarding the acute influence of systemically administered Mn 2+ on organs of interest is limited. One recent study revealed that subcutaneous use of a single high‐dose MnCl 2 at 500 μmol/kg in rats could lead to mild but detectable neurophysiological and behavioral changes, whereas a single low‐dose administration at 100 μmol/kg did not cause this occurrence, although it did not mention the status of other important organs such as liver, kidneys and heart .…”
