Chronic polychlorinated biphenyls exposure on three generations of oldfield mice (Peromyscus polionotus): Effects on reproduction, growth, and body residues

Abstract: Effects of chronic dietary exposure to low levels of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) on reproduction, growth and whole body burdens were investigated in three generations of Peromyscus polionotus. Mated pairs were maintained on a diet containing 5 mg/kg PCBs (Aroclor 1254) for 12 months, beginning exposure as young adults; matched controls received a similar diet without PCBs. Offspring were maintained on the parental regime and paired at maturity with non-siblings in the same group. In first and second gener… Show more

“…5, a body weight of 0.22 kg (Table 1) and a food consumption rate of 3.4 glday (Table l), the estimated NOAEL for this species would be 20.155 mgkg bw/day. A dietary LOAEL of 5 ppm was reported for oldfield mice (McCoy et al 1995). Using Eq.…”

“…Empirical data are available for four species: laboratory rat (Linder et al 1974), white-footed mouse (Linzey 1987), oldfield mouse (McCoy et al 1995) and mink (Aulerich and Ringer 1977). Reproductive and/or developmental changes were the endpoints evaluated in each of these studies.…”

“…Phillips and Batty (1995) injected female Mongolian gerbils with a single dose of Aroclor 1254 (2 mg and 4 mg) after mating with untreated males and found no differences in the percentage of successful breeding pairs or litter size. McCoy et al (1995) found that pairs of Oldfield mice (Peromyscus polionotus) consuming diets containing Aroclor had higher fertility rates than their corresponding controls.…”

“…The short-tailed shrew NOAEL and LOAEL are based on a study in which oldfield mice were fed Aroclor-1254 for 12 months (McCoy et al 1995). A dose level of 0.68 mg/kg/d, designated as the chronic LOAEL, caused a reduction in the number of litters, offspring weights, and offspring survival.…”

“…Because an experimental NOAEL was not established, the chronic NOAEL was estimated by multiplying the chronic LOAEL by a LOAEL-NOAEL uncertainty factor of 0.1. Based on the results of McCoy et al (1995), short-tailed shrews experiencing exposures z the LOAEL may display impaired reproduction and offspring viability.…”
