Chronic Rhinosinusitis Associated with Erectile Dysfunction: A Population-Based Study

Abstract: Few studies have investigated the relationship between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and erectile dysfunction (ED). This case-control study aimed to investigate the association between CRS and the risk of ED in a large national sample. Tapping Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified people 30 years or older with a new primary diagnosis of CRS between 1996 and 2007. The cases were compared with sex- and age-matched controls. We identified 14 039 cases and recruited 140 387 matched con… Show more

“…Olfaction is central to many important sexual behaviors, and its role in mate attraction has been extensively studied in nonhuman mammals (6). Olfactory function is also significantly correlated with sexual function in humans (7,8), and the primary olfactory network has numerous projections to key limbic areas involved in sexual and emotional processing (9). Furthermore, functional neuroimaging has demonstrated that when exposed to a feminine scent, heterosexual men exhibit increased brain activity in limbic regions associated with sexual desire and arousal (10).…”

“…Increasing age was not a significant correlate with erectile dysfunction in our study. Different results have been reported in various studies done in other parts of the world and p-value in few studies was >0.05 showing that no significant relationship of increasing age with ED and others had p-value <0.05 showing significant association of advancing age with presence of ED 11,12,20 . There is a gradual decline in erectile function with aging in healthy individuals as well.…”

“…Another similar nation-wide trial performed in Taiwan has detected that AR is a risk factor for ED development in 30-year-old or older men. 23 Different from that study, the patients in both the AR and the control groups in our study were consisted of individuals without any comorbidities who do not use medical therapy due to any chronic disease. Therefore, no correction was necessary to prevent confounding by different diseases during the assessment of the results.…”
