Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP): the correlation between expression of Galectin-10 and Clinical-Cytological Grading (CCG)

Abstract: Background Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is typically characterized by Type 2 inflammation. Several biomarkers of eosinophilic inflammation, including Galectin-10, also known as Charcot-Leyden crystal protein (CLCP), have been identified to establish eosinophilic infiltration of polyps, a reliable predictor of recurrence. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the Galectin-10 expression in nasal polyps of patients with CRSwNP and to assess the correlation of Charcot-Leyden crystals expression to t… Show more

“…Chronic inflammation has been identified as a causative factor in the development of polyps in different mucosal tissues across the human body (i.e., urinary tract, upper respiratory tract and lower gastrointestinal tract) [ 47 , 48 , 49 ]. With regard to EPs, a potential inflammation-driven pathogenesis has been long neglected by the scientific community.…”

“…9 Although tissue-infiltrating eosinophil count does not always correlate with disease activity or severity, 10 the significant correlation between galectin-10 expression and clinicalcytological grading in NPs the of patients with CRSwNP has been reported. 11 We observed galectin-10 levels and tissue eosinophil counts in the NPs. Galectin-10 is a cytoplasmic protein of eosinophils released from cytolytic cells 12 and has potential as a biomarker for activated eosinophils in eosinophilic inflammatory diseases.…”

“…Although Charcot–Leyden crystal proteins are not a major determinant of human regulatory T-cell function (viability) [ 41 ], CLC is one of luminal-captured biomarkers of inflammation and eosinophilic esophagitis [ 42 ], and Gal-10 expression in the nasal polyps of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis was correlated with the severity of the disease according to Clinical-Cytological Grading [ 43 ]. Logistic regression analysis showed that crystalline CLCs in nasal tissues are predictive of nasal polyp recurrence.…”
