Chronic School Absenteeism of Children with Chronic Kidney Disease

Abstract: We evaluated the frequency of chronic school absenteeism (≥18 missed school days per year) among children with mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease. Chronic absenteeism was present in 17.3% of children with chronic kidney disease, compared with 2.7% of children in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

“…In our sample, 40% of youth with SSRDs had severe school absenteeism, defined as missing more than 1 month of school in the past academic year. By comparison, 2.7% of children in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey had missed ⩾ 18 days of school in the past year (Hansen et al, 2016) and 17.5% of children with chronic renal disease missed ⩾ 18 days of school in the past year (Richardson et al, 2018). This indicates that rates of severe school absenteeism in the present study of hospitalized youth with SSRDs are notably higher when compared to national norms and other pediatric chronic illness populations such as cancer, chronic renal disease, and cystic fibrosis (Lum et al, 2017).…”
