Chronic stable angina: Addressing the needs of patients through risk reduction, education and support

Abstract: Chronic stable angina (CSA) is one of the most common symptoms experienced by persons with heart disease. CSA is defined by the physical symptoms resulting from blockage of blood flow through the coronary arteries. Anginal symptoms generally occur as a result of increased demands for blood flow, such as with physical activity, eating a large meal, emotional upset or exposure to cold weather. Symptoms vary widely and can include discomfort in the chest, arms, back and jaw, shortness of breath and a sense of inc… Show more

“…In this analysis, the performance of the EQ-5D and SF-6D was evaluated against the five dimensional scales of the SAQ as an external indicator of health status. Scores for each scale were divided into two groups (>= 50 and<50) indicating better cardiac functioning and worse functioning [ 38 ]. ES was used to define the discriminative capacity, and was computed as the difference between the mean of the two groups mentioned above, divided by the pooled standard deviation.…”

“…A medical evaluation including an exercise stress test is generally indicated for patients with angina prior to a regular physical activity program. 17 The goals of pharmacological treatment include: (1) alleviation of symptoms, extending exercise duration, and improvement in QoL, (2) improvement in prognosis and prevention of CV events by reducing acute coronary thrombosis incidence and slowing atherosclerotic progression and ventricular dysfunction. 18 Ferrari et al have described guideline-recommended drug therapies for the alleviation of chronic stable angina.…”

“…Although chest pain or discomfort is the primary and perhaps most specific symptom experienced by people with chronic stable angina, it often occurs with other symptoms, in particular fatigue and dyspnoea (Hagman & Wilhelmsen 1981, Berra et al. 2008, Herlitz et al.…”
