This study was carried out to ascertain the antioxidant properties of vitamin E on haematoxicity caused by gasoline in albino rats using the haemoglobin and white cell count as indices. Thirty-five rats fed diet containing 1000iu of vitamin E per 100mg of feed for 2 weeks (to saturation) prior experiment were injected gasoline intraperitoneally while symptoms of toxicity and haematological parameters were monitored. The result showed that feeding on vitamin E diet increased the haemoglobin concentration while decreasing the elevated white cell count observed in gasoline treated rats, thereby conferring some protection against gasoline on the rats. The study also showed dose dependent reduction in haemoglobin concentration and increase white cell count in gasoline treated rats compared with increase haemoglobin and decrease white cell count in vitamin E treated rats. There was significant increase in haemoglobin concentration and decrease white cell count of vitamin E treated rats when compared with gasoline treated rats. This suggests that vitamin E conferred some protection on the rats against the haematotoxic effect of gasoline. Therefore feeding on diet containing vitamin E could help reverse the effect of gasoline intoxication in the body since it acts mainly as an antioxidant.

Objective: This work assessed the antimicrobial activity and toxicological consequence of the ethanolic extract of Ricinodendron heudelotii (Baill). Methods:The antimicrobial potential of the leaf extract was investigated against 9 different microorganisms using the agar well diffusion method while the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was ascertained. Toxicity evaluations were carried out on five groups of seven albino rats each for 28 days. Rats in Group A received normal saline, while those in Groups B, C, D, and E received 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) of the extract. After treatment, they were anesthetized, blood samples collected for biochemical assays; organs isolated, weighed, and processed for histopathological studies. Results:The phytochemical screening showed the presence of glycosides, tannins, polyphenols, terpenoids, and alkaloids while saponin was absent. Antimicrobial effect was observed against 7 of the 9 microorganisms tested with inhibition zone and MIC ranging from 18 to 36 mm and 31.25 to 62.5 mg/mL, respectively. Liver function tests were significantly (p<0.05) increased, whereas no significant change in total protein and creatinine levels was observed. Histology showed a sinusoidal congestion and vacuolar degeneration of hepatocytes in groups administered higher doses, and a dose-dependent reduction was observed in some hematological parameters. Conclusion:The results obtained suggest that the R. heudelotii may not induce significant toxic effect below 3600 mg/kg b.w. and could serve as an effective antibiotic.

The negative consequences of crude oil exploration and exploitation on the health status of exposed individuals cannot be over emphasized, regardless of its financial benefits. Besides, consumption of this crude oil by the rural populace living in oil rich regions as traditional medicine for illnesses have raised local and international questions as to its safety. The aim of this study was to investigate the pathological effects related to Escravos crude oil ingestion by Chinchilla rabbits. A total of thirty Chinchilla rabbits of age twelve to fourteen weeks and weighing 1.2 to 1.45 kg was used. Crude oil was orally given at the dose of 15, 20, 25 and 30 mg/kg body weight, corresponding to groups B, C, D and E, respectively for 28 days, while group A was the Control. The result showed a significant increase in the total white blood cell, monocyte, granulolytic leucocyte, platelet counts, C-reactive protein and serum creatinine (p < 0.05). Microscopy of the stained tissue sections showed marked deposition of collagen fibers, glomerulonephritis and atrophic glomeruli among others. There is an agreement between the biochemical, haematological and histological findings. Thus, Escravos crude oil is suggested to have a potential to cause haematoxicity and alter the architecture of the kidney.
