Chronic viral HBeAg-negative hepatitis B: Epidemiological, clinical and biochemical characteristics in an outpatient descriptive cohort in Burkina Faso

Abstract: Our study aimed to describe epidemiological and diagnostic features in an outpatient's cohort with chronic HBeAg-negative hepatitis B. Patients and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with a retrospective data collection was implemented from January 2004 to April 2016 in the hepato-gastroenterology department of the University Teaching Hospital Yalgado Ouédraogo (CHU-YO) in Burkina Faso. Results: Overall 325 HBeAg negative patients met the inclusion criteria. The sex ratio was 1.5 and the mean age 38.… Show more

“…The patient group mainly consisted of older males with normal ALT and AFP levels. The majority of patients had HBeAg negative chronic infection (inactive carriers), which is commonly seen in patients with chronic HBV infection in African regions [ 33 , 34 ] and other parts of the world [ 35 ]. This HBV profile was generally associated with a positive prognosis and low severity of liver disease [ 36 ].…”

“…Thus, the use of HBeAg as a marker of viral replication could aggravate the burden of HBV in resource-limited countries, particularly in its use for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HBV. For instance, in Burkina Faso, HBeAg-negative patients should be closely monitored, as around 77% rapidly progress to cirrhosis and HCC [29]. In addition, the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has enabled several urban and rural laboratories to be equipped with molecular biology platforms.…”
