Chronological changes of mumps virus genotypes in Japan between 1999–2013

Abstract: These data demonstrated that the genotype G strains have been endemically perpetuating as the major type over a wide area of Japan since 2001, although the genotype G strains that emerged after 2011 differed from the earlier strains.

“…The same sequences were also found in other countries. The sequences in lineage 2 were concentrated in Asian countries, including Japan, China, and Laos from 2000 to 2016 [17,18], but a few of them were also found in the United States in 2006 and 2014–2015. In addition, similar to genotype , the MuV genotype sequences from the different years and areas were intra-crossed within lineages 1 and 2 and did not show obvious differences in time or geography.…”

“…However, other countries/areas were also found to have the virus, including countries in Asia. Lineage 2 was concentrated in Asia, particularly in Japan [17,18]. The two genotype MuV lineages were both found in China from outbreaks and sporadic cases.…”

“…Genotype G was the most frequently detected genotype in Spain during the period of the study, as well as in other western countries and Japan [3,17,27]. A particular variant of this genotype (MuVi/ Sheffield.GBR.1.05/[G]) seemed to be dominant, not only in Spain but also in other countries, according to GenBank records.…”

“…The reason for this is that from 2008–2011, only children aged 2–5 years were the target population of the EPI, while all children above five years are at high risk of mumps. Besides, the cluster 2 strains of genotype G strains first appeared in 2011, and were dominant in 2011 and 2012 [ 32 ]. Thus, the intervention effect was indiscernible in the first three years.…”
