Chryseobacterium gleum infection in patient with extreme malnutrition and hepatic lesion – case report

Abstract: Chrysobacterium gleum is a nonmotile, oxidase positive, non-fermentative unsporulate Gram-negative bacillus, bacteria belonging to the genus Chrysobacterium. Infections caused by Chrysobacterium spp are usually health care associated and the most frequent in immunocompromised patients and neonates. In this report we present a case of a 35-yearold female patient admitted to the hospital for extreme malnutrition and a hepatic lesion. Chrysobacterium gleum was isolated from tracheal aspirate and blood culture. Th… Show more

“…A long hospital stay and empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics make the patients prone to acquire nosocomial infections especially with unconventional organisms and C. gleum is one such rare nosocomial pathogen. [8][9][10][11] This study highlights the role of C. gleum in patients who recovered from COVID-19-induced pneumonia and later presented with bacterial pneumonia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case series-based study showing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) due to C. gleum in patients recovered post-COVID-19 pneumonia.…”

“…Very limited clinical data are available for this newly identified pathogen, and it has been rarely reported as a cause of sepsis anywhere in the world (Table 1) (8). The correct identification of this pathogen is essential due to its contrasting susceptibility pattern to other NFGNBs.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, the present case is the second reported case of sepsis due to C. gleum in the world. In 2015, Brkic et al reported a case of a 35-year-old female patient with extreme malnutrition and a hepatic lesion, whose blood and tracheal aspirate cultures showed growth of C. gleum (8).…”
