“…Most importantly, current smokers had a higher rate of HF incidence than former and never smokers. Our finding was in line with previous studies [8,27] reporting that smoking has negative effects on cardiac function. Namely, tobacco smoking can cause endothelial dysfunction by reducing nitrogen monoxide production, pro-thrombotic conditions, and activating inflammatory routes [28,29,30,31].…”

“…To date, numerous studies have reported associations between HF and modifiable cardiovascular risk factors including smoking, control of blood pressure and glucose, obesity, physical inactivity due to sedentary lifestyle, and unhealthy diet [3,4,5,6]. Among these, smoking has been known as the variable most strongly associated with HF risk [7,8] through cardiac dysfunction such as vessel constriction, impaired endothelial function, and increased blood pressure [8,9].…”

“…Specifically, smoking not only increases the risk of coronary artery disease, a major cause of HF, but also increases systolic and diastolic blood pressure and oxidative stress. Furthermore, smoking can lead to vascular inflammation, worsening endothelial function and renal function, all of which have been implicated in the pathophysiology of HF 11 .…”

“…1 Cigarette smoking is one of the most important lifestyle-associated risk factors involved in human diseases. 2,3 Previous studies have shown that smoking is associated with important negative effects on reproductive health both in men and women. 4 Experimental studies in animal models have indicated that cigarette smoking could be directly or indirectly toxic to spermatogenesis.…”
