Cigarette smoking and its association with serum lipid/lipoprotein among Chinese nonagenarians/centenarians

Abstract: ObjectiveCigarette smoking had been confirmed as an increased risk for dyslipidemia, but none of the evidence was from long-lived population. In present study, we detected relationship between cigarette smoking habits and serum lipid/lipoprotein (serum Triglyceride (TG), Total cholesterol (TC), Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)) among Chinese Nonagenarians/Centenarian.MethodsThe present study analyzed data from the survey that was conducted on all residents aged 90 years or more … Show more

“…25,26 In our study, multiple logistic regressions showed that tobacco consumption was not associated with risk for dyslipidemia comparable to Yan-Ling Z et al, study. 27 On the contrary, previous studies have also confirmed that heavy tobacco smoking is associated with increased total cholesterol and higher risk for abnormal total cholesterol in long-lived subjects. 27 Use of tobacco mainly cigarette smoking is ever rising in Pakistan.…”

“…27 On the contrary, previous studies have also confirmed that heavy tobacco smoking is associated with increased total cholesterol and higher risk for abnormal total cholesterol in long-lived subjects. 27 Use of tobacco mainly cigarette smoking is ever rising in Pakistan. 21 Increased prevalence was due to accessibility and availability of tobacco that play a critical role in influencing adolescents to use tobacco.…”

“…Previous reports have also described inconsistent relationships between dyslipidemia and smoking. [3234] We identified dyslipidemia based on hypercholesterolemia, although previous studies have also described differences in the development of dyslipidemia according to smoking status among men and women. [33,35,36] For example, high concentrations of triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were associated with smoking status among men, while high triglyceride concentrations and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations were associated with smoking among women.…”

“…Dyslipidemia is generally characterized by elevated levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and decreased levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol [ 1 ]. Dyslipidemia as an independent preventable risk factor of coronary heart disease has been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular mortality [ 2 7 ].…”
