Cine MR imaging of uterine peristalsis in patients with endometriosis

Abstract: Endometriosis is one of the most important causes of infertility; however the precise mechanism by which it affects female fertility is unclear. The objective of this study was to study the functional aspects of the uterus by evaluating uterine contractility in patients with endometrial cysts of the ovary. The study population was recruited from two institutes and consisted of 26 women (periovulatory (10), luteal (13), and menstrual phase (3); age range: 19-51 years) with untreated endometriosis; the control g… Show more

“…They went on to suggest that MRI should be avoided in the menstrual phase [35]. In addition, these authors reported that the evaluation of uterine peristalsis is optimal during the peri-ovulatory phase [36]. Solak et al reported no significant difference in size of lesions in the early days of menstruation compared to the mid-menstrual period for abdominal wall endometriosis [37].…”

“…During the peri-ovulatory phase, uterine peristalsis is significantly reduced in subjects with endometriosis when compared to normal controls that may be due to increased, sustained contractions in endometriosis patients (LE4) [36, 78]. This abnormal uterine peristalsis in endometriosis patients could interfere with fertility [79].…”

“…Interestingly, studying 41 subjects with endometriosis, they detected signs of adenomyosis in 85% of them; this has been taken as an indication that infertility in at least some cases with endometriosis may be explained by the contemporary presence of adenomyotic foci. In this regard, Kido et al (2007), using cine-MRI, have shown that uterine peristalsis appears to be suppressed during the periovulatory phase also in patients with endometriosis.…”

“…The uterine junctional zone was defined as the inner third of the myometrium [24]. All samples containing endometrium and junctional zone were collected from the mid-fundal and isthmic areas of the uterine anterior wall.…”
