Cinematherapy with African American couples

Abstract: Cinematherapy is the use of movies as an intervention with clients. When done well, it is used to evoke and process emotion, psychoeducate, increase empathy, and problem‐solve. However, there is no literature on utilizing movies as an intervention with African American couples. Based on literature and research about culture‐informed interventions and media literacy, cinematherapy with African American couples would be more meaningful and effective if clinicians utilize Black‐oriented movies.

“…Therapists could ensure they develop the awareness and skills, to discuss depictions of culture and mental health issues presented in movies. Dunham andDermer (2020, p.1472) found cinematherapy helpful if used in 'culture-informed' interventions and cinema can be useful as a medium known to clients across cultures (Niemiec and Wedding, 2014) that can 'transcend all barriers and differences' (Strong and Lotter, 2015, p1).…”

“…While movies may feature stereotyped representations of mental health, gender, race, class, disability, sexuality and other issues, they can provide insight or prove educational (Hamilton, 2013; Mangot & Murthy, 2017). Cinema therapy can be useful as a cross‐cultural medium (Niemiec & Wedding, 2014) that can “transcend all barriers and differences” (Strong & Lotter, 2015, p. 1) if therapists develop skills in “culture‐informed” interventions (Dunham & Dermer, 2020, p. 1472).…”
