Ciprofloxacin-imprinted hydrogels for drug sustained release in aqueous media

Abstract: In this study several ciprofloxacin (CFX) imprinted and non-imprinted hydrogels were prepared and evaluated as ocular drug delivery systems in aqueous media. 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was used as a solvent and backbone monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linker, methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer and CFX as the template molecule. CFX-imprinted hydrogels (MIPs) were prepared applying different CFX:MAA molar ratios (1:16, 1:20 and 1:32) in feed composition of monomer s… Show more

“…MI technology has been successfully investigated by researchers to increase the drug loading and the drug release time from hydrogel matrices [59,[62][63][64]. There are several factors that can cause the increase in partitioning due to imprinting, including but not limited to temperature, pressure, polarity of polymerisation solvent, initiator concentration and degree of crosslinking [65,66].…”

“…The cumulative release amount was also higher in the end, which might be related to the weak binding effect. That's because MAA could be combined with CFX through hydrogen bonding and this kind of combination can reach an equilibrium state [49] . C. Alvarez‐Lorenzo et al .…”
