“…The rate at which nicotine penetrates the skin was severalfold faster at 04: 00 than in the afternoon [25] . The activity of a popular topical anti-infl ammatory corticosteroid cream medication was greater when applied in the afternoon than morning [26] . A diurnal variation in the plasma testosterone concentrations was observed with two 37-cm 2 permeation-enhanced transdermal patches applied nightly at 10 p.m. [27] .…”

“…Chronobiological parameters are currently being used in assessing the right time point for the application of a pharmaceutical dosing time for certain medications, or the best time point for obtaining certain reactions (e.g. assessing allergic reactions or drug activity) [10][11][12] to optimize large clinical studies and the development of pharmaceuticals. Different chronobiological rhythms play a role depending on the parameters or pathologies being evaluated.…”

“…In a study conducted to evaluate the dependency of the time of day of the application of betamethasone dipropionate, Pershing et al [10] observed more extensive and prolonged effects over the course of the day when the drug was applied at 16: 00 h than when applied at 09: 00 h. Maximal skin-blanching effects were observed 6 h after application which would coincide with circadian increases in TEWL in the evening and at night. TEWL is a measure of skin barrier function -an increase in comparison to baseline values is considered to be a marker of skin barrier perturbation.…”

“…This color scale has been previously demonstrated to correlate well with the skin blanching response across many corticosteroids in a variety of vehicle bases. [9][10][11][12]14 Ventral forearm stratum corneum was harvested with adhesive discs either prepared in our laboratory or purchased commercially. An 8-mmdiameter disposable biopsy punch (Acu-Punch 1 ; Acuderm, Ft. Lauderdale, FL) was used to generate multiple discs from Transpore TM adhesive tape (3M, St. Paul, MN) in our laboratory by trained staff.…”

“…3 The skin blanching response was measured as the loss of skin color at the treatment site by the reflectance colorimeter a* scale. [9][10][11][12] Thus, increasing skin blanching responses are associated with decreasing colorimeter a* scale values. The skin blanching response was measured simultaneously in the above subjects at baseline, immediately after residual product removal, and again 2, 4, 6, 18, 20, 22, and 24 h after residual product removal, using the reflectance colorimeter a* scale.…”
