Circadian angiogenesis

Abstract: Daily rhythms of light/darkness, activity/rest and feeding/fasting are important in human physiology and their disruption (for example by frequent changes between day and night shifts) increases the risk of disease. Many of the diseases found to be associated with such disrupted circadian lifestyles, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders and neurological diseases, depend on pathological de-regulation of angiogenesis, suggesting that disrupting the circadian clock will impair the physio… Show more

“…Generally, directly measured information seems more accurate than reported information because of reduced reporting error, and thus many Korean researchers use data from the KNHANES rather than from CHS. Many previous studies, however, have also provided insights into significant variability in biomarkers from laboratory and physical health exams [ 22 , 29 - 31 ]. Moreover, the self-reporting method is still used in population-based studies for its low cost and relative ease in practice [ 4 , 32 - 34 ].…”

“…The clock machinery has been identified in vascular cells (Nonaka et al, 2001;Takeda et al, 2007), bringing attention to the effect of the circadian clock in vascular formation and remodeling. Particularly, the peripheral circadian clock in the vasculature influences the formation of new blood vessels in vivo (Jensen et al, 2014). A disrupted circadian clock leads to pathological, uncontrolled angiogenesis (Anea et al, 2009;Jensen et al, 2014;Block, 2018).…”

“…Particularly, the peripheral circadian clock in the vasculature influences the formation of new blood vessels in vivo (Jensen et al, 2014). A disrupted circadian clock leads to pathological, uncontrolled angiogenesis (Anea et al, 2009;Jensen et al, 2014;Block, 2018). Moreover, the effect of circadian clocks on the cell specific response to micro-environmental changes has been examined.…”

“…Alarmingly, disrupted circadian rhythms predict reduced overall survival in patients with advanced lung, kidney, breast, and colon cancer. At the cellular level, disrupted circadian rhythms are known to adversely affect angiogenesis, 2 apoptosis, 3 and many other biological processes important in cancer. It is well known that melatonin is important as a “timekeeper” for the circadian system, cuing the system to coordinate with environmental light and darkness.…”
