Circadian Periodicity of Circulating Plasma Lipid Peroxides, Uric Acid and Ascorbic Acid in Renal Stone Formers

Abstract: Circadian periodicity of plasma lipid peroxides and serum ascorbic acid and uric acid levels were studied in one hundred renal stone formers (55 women and 45 men; age 20-60 years) and 50 clinically healthy volunteers (21 women and 29 men; age 21-45 years) with diurnal activity from 06:00 to 22:00 and nocturnal rest. A marked circadian variation was demonstrated by population-mean-cosinor for all studied variables in stone formers and healthy subjects. By comparison to the healthy controls, parameter tests indi… Show more

“…Thus, a delivery method of turmeric that produces an antioxidant effect must be identified before advancing to a main study. The rationale for the hypothesis was based on evidence showing circadian rhythmicity in blood and urine levels of oxidative stress markers [88] and findings that turmeric reduces oxidative stress markers [46,89].…”

“…Circadian variation in lipid peroxidation marker MDA is observed in mouse erythrocytes [ 185 ] as well as in healthy human volunteers. Circadian control of plasma lipid peroxides (MDA) and serum ascorbic acid and uric acid levels were reported [ 186 ]. Night shift workers have lower levels of antioxidant defense components and higher levels of TBARS when compared to day workers [ 187 ].…”

“…The most important risk factor for uric acid crystallization and stone formation is a low urine pH (below 5.5) due to impaired urinary uric acid excretion. Circadian variation in serum and urinary urate has been reported in healthy subjects and renal stone formers [12,16]. Main causes of low urine pH, beside high uric acid excretion, are chronic diarrhoea, severe dehydration, and diabetic ketoacidosis.…”

“…Physiologic variability can be made into a powerful source of new information with clinical applications [15]. Marked circadian variations in serum uric acid and ascorbic acid concentration were recently reported in healthy volunteers and in renal stone formers [16].…”
