Circadian Variation of the Plasma 17-Hydroxycorticosteroids in Central Nervous System Disease1

Abstract: Only 6 of 49 hands with Dupuytren's contracture not ini¬ tially treated and followed for one to six years required operation. An early or aggressive approach to treatment is not warranted with the single exception of contracture at the proximal interphalangeal joint.

“…1 and 2.) The children's pattern for cortisol secretion followed the adult pattern except that the elevation of cortisol at 0600 hours was more pronounced than for adults (Kreiger & Kreiger, 1966;Luce, 1970). This finding may indicate that the cerebro-hypothalamic system is not yet as finely tuned as in adulthood or that cortisol secretion in children is influenced by their greater output of growth hormone during deep sleep.…”

“…The circadian pattern of cortisol secretion is firmly fixed in the man and does not change even during most of chronic conditions (P insker and Bultasová 1979). Exceptions can be found in cases of some pathological conditions affecting the hypothalamus, and/or impairing consciousness or sleep (Krieger and Krieger 1966). Circadian rhythm of cortisol secretion is affected in most patients with Cushing's syndrome.…”

“…Additionally, a normal nycterohemeral variation of the plasma 11-OHCS level was found in all the subjects according to the criteria by Krieger and Krieger (1966) and Krieger et al (1971). Thus, a normal pattern is defined as one in which all plasma 11-OHCS levels after 8 a.m. are less than 75 % of the 8 a.m. level, with the exception of the noon level, which should not exceed the 8 a.m. value by more than 15 %.…”
