Circadian variations in salivary chromogranin a concentrations during a 24-hour period in dogs

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine if salivary chromogranin a secretion in dogs exhibits a circadian rhythm. Saliva sampling was performed during three different sessions occurring in three nonconsecutive 24-h periods. Sixteen healthy adult beagle dogs (8 males and 8 females) were moved to a sampling room and housed individually in cages. Saliva samples were obtained every 4 h from 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. the following day. In the interest of habituation, saliva was obtained hourly from each dog 3 h b… Show more

“…In addition, CgA in saliva has been found to be increased in early morning samples (7:00 am) in humans [13, 77, 78]. In our study, there was no significant difference in the concentrations of plasma CST, VS and saliva CST between time of day, which is in agreement with a previous study that used an ELISA for human CgA 344–374 amino acid sequence for saliva samples in dogs [3]. On the other hand, a circadian variation in CgA has been found in plasma and saliva in humans [13, 79].…”

“…A significant advantage with respect to other salivary markers of stress, such as cortisol (Ruis et al, 1997) alphaamylase (Harmon et al, 2008) and IgA (Muneta et al, 2010), is that it is not influenced by circadian variation. This fact has been demonstrated in dogs (Kanai et al, 2008). It has also been shown that in humans salivary CgA is probably not affected by food intake (Toda et al, 2004).…”

“…Nos últimos anos, a utilização de biomarcadores como método de investigação de doenças consolidou-se, como indicadores inovadores de grande potencial para a identificação e o diagnóstico em todo mundo (WANG et al, 2016).
