Circular dichroism of RbHe and RbN2molecules

Abstract: We present measurements of the circular dichroism of optically pumped Rb vapor near the D 1 resonance line. Collisions with the buffer gases 3 He and N 2 reduce the transparency of the vapor, even when fully polarized. We use two methods to measure this effect, show that the He results can be understood from RbHe potential curves, and show how this effect conspires with the spectral profile of the optical pumping light to increase the laser power demands for optical pumping of very optically thick samples.

“…We justify the use of this approach because it reliably reproduces the measured values of P ∞ as function of ν for a pure Rb cell reported in Ref. [32], when we set T d = 0.3 ps for Rb D2. Finally, the benefits of pure K & Na SEOP are also limited by off resonant absorption by the D2 lines, where (3σ…”

“…where we've assumed pumping with perfectly monochromatic light with frequency ν. Measurements by Romalis et al [20] and more recently by Lancor et al [31][32][33] indicate that |T d | is of order 0.1 ps for alkali-3 He collisions. Using this value, we find that (3σ 3 .…”

“…Under the high density conditions of SEOP, absorption of light during alkali-metal-He (or N 2 ) collisions does not obey the selection rules for isolated atoms (Lancor et al , 2010a,b). This is because the fine-structure states are mixed during collisions with He atoms, as illustrated in Fig.…”

“…Figure 8 shows measurements of the circular dichroism P ∞ of maximally polarized Rb atoms in the presence of 3 He gas (Lancor et al , 2010a,b). While the dichroism peaks at very close to 1 right on resonance, at only 1 nm (475 GHz) detuning from the line center, the dichroism has already dropped to 0.9.…”
