Circular economy at the company level: An empirical study based on sustainability reports

Abstract: Circular economy (CE) has attracted both media and academic interest. However, there is a lack of empirical work that clarifies the specific activities involved in CE at the firm level. To fill this gap, this article offers an analysis of how firms disclose information about their activities associated with CE, based on an extensive worldwide dataset of sustainability reports from 1367 companies. The findings point to a rather limited, superficial and reductionist use of the concept of CE by firms. The concept… Show more

“…In order to address the research questions, an exploratory empirical study was planned based on a qualitative content analysis of GE standards. This “research method for the subjective interpretation of the content of text data through systematic classification process of coding and identifying themes or patterns” (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005, p. 1278), has been used extensively in the literature to empirically analyze sustainable reports, corporate certifications, and standards (e.g., Boiral & Heras‐Saizarbitoria, 2017; Heras‐Saizarbitoria et al, 2016; Heras‐Saizarbitoria et al, 2023).…”

“…Tallentire and Steubing (2020) provide an interesting study to identify the best‐performing waste collection methods for packaging and packaging waste, measuring the recovery potential and environmental benefits. Meanwhile, Heras‐Saizarbitoria et al (2023) focused on clarifying information about companies' Circular Economy activities. The main findings indicate that the concept of Circular Economy is mostly associated with conventional practices such as waste management and recycling; reduction, reuse, and remanufacturing are rarely considered.…”

“…In relation to this, corporate disclosure can be a tool that encourages companies to spread their strategic vision and management of circular economy models. By doing this, companies legitimize their role in the context in which they operate, engaging with stakeholders and maintaining public support [6]. Corporate disclosures reduce information gaps on sensitive issues like the CE and provide information on emerging issues that could be relevant for stakeholders to make economic decisions.…”
