Circulating Dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 Variants between April 2021 and February 2022 in Turkey

Abstract: The diagnosis of new variants and monitoring their potential effects on diagnosis, therapeutics, and vaccines by genomic sequencing is essential to manage global public crises. In the current study, spike-genome next-generation sequencing was generated from 492 SARS-CoV-2 isolates to evaluate the mutations in Turkey from April 2021 to February 2022. The variant analysis was performed using (Coronavirus Antiviral and Resistance Database (CoV-RDB) by Stanford University). We revealed that the lineages Alpha (B.1… Show more

“…In our findings, Omicron BA.1 was the most common circulating variant beginning in December 2021. This agrees with several SARS-CoV-2 transmission rate reports from several countries, such as the Netherlands, Turkey, Germany, and Norway [ 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 ]. Omicron BA.4 and Omicron BA.5 were found for the first time in South Africa in January 2022 [ 48 ].…”

“…However, as more transmissible novel strain, omicron variant became prevalent worldwide since the start of 2022, the vaccine effectiveness was found to be decreased remarkably ( 46 48 ). In this research, the 6-month post-vaccination follow-up period through which the cases with breakthrough infections were diagnosed coincided with the time span when the omicron variant displaced the previously dominant delta variant in Turkey ( 49 , 50 ). At the end of the follow-up, no significant difference was found in the rate of symptomatic breakthrough infections between adolescents with T1D and healthy controls.…”

“…However, by September 2021, the Delta variant became the dominant variant in Türkiye. In December 2021, the Omicron variant was reported for the first time, and by February 2022 it overtook the Delta variant [ 47 ]. According to these results, it can be speculated that the Alpha variant was initially dominant during the study, followed by the Delta variant, and in the final stages of the study, the Omicron variant was detected for the first time.…”
