Circulating intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), E-selectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) in head and neck cancer

Abstract: The sera from patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma ( n = 30), oral carcinoma ( n = 22) and laryngeal carcinoma ( n = 22) was extracted before treatment. The concentration of circulating intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), E-selectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) was measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay and compared with those from normal subjects ( n = 20). The concentration of circulating IC… Show more

“…Elevated circulating levels of E-selectin have been reported in oral SCC and may represent a marker of disease presence, although in this particular study there was no correlation between early and late lesions (Liu et al, 1999).…”

“…With this finding, we concluded that VEGF may not be used as a prognostic factor, but further studies are needed to confirm the results. Recently conducted studies revealed the importance of adhesion process in tumor biology [17]. The existence of adhesion molecules in circulation has been shown in head and neck carcinomas [15][16][17][18][19][20][21].…”

“…The possible roles of soluble adhesion molecules in the prognosis of head and neck carcinoma deserve further elucidation and evaluation. However, some studies show that the level of circulating adhesion molecules such as VCAM is higher in cancer patients than in the normal population [15][16][17][18][19][20][21].…”
