Circulating level of interleukin-6 in relation to body mass indices and lipid profile in Egyptian adults with overweight and obesity

Abstract: Background Obesity is an important feature of metabolic syndrome, and the link between them has been attributed to the state of chronic inflammatory process. The purpose of the study is to investigate the relation of circulating level of IL-6 as an inflammatory cytokine to body mass index and lipid profile in adults with overweight and obesity. Methods This cross-sectional study included 15 adults with overweight, 45 with obesity (15 grade I, 15 grade II, and 15 grade III), and 25 average weight controls. Cir… Show more

“…IL-6 is a cytokine acting on the hepatocytes to induce the production of CRP and fibrin [32]. Approximately 35% of IL-6 is secreted by adipose tissue and the level of IL-6 is increased as BMI increases [33,34]. Therefore, it is logical that overweight individuals who consumed yogurt may have a somewhat stronger reduction in IL-6 compared with their normal weight counterparts.…”

“…Obesity is also characterised by a pro-inflammatory status of more reduced intensity, but chronic, termed metabolic inflammation, in which the activated monocytes infiltrate the adipose tissue, and differentiate into resident adipose macrophages which in turn secrete inflammatory cytokines, among which IL-6 [ 29 ]. Consequently, obese patients have increased IL-6 values, which results in an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, insulin resistance, and diabetes mellitus [ 30 ]. These data are confirmed by the results of our study, where the IL-6 level in obese patients was indeed correlated with coronary macrovascular disease.…”
