Circulating Levels of Adipocytokines as Potential Biomarkers for Early Detection of Colorectal Carcinoma in Egyptian Patients

Abstract: Background: Early detection of various kinds of cancers nowadays is needed including colorectal cancer due to the highly significant effects in improving cancer treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential value of adiponectin, visfatin and resistin as early biomarkers for colorectal cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Serum levels of adiponectin, visfatin and resistin were measured by a sandwich-enzyme-linked (ELISA) assay technique in 114 serum samples comprising 34 patients with colore… Show more

“…In subsequent screening steps for remained articles, eight papers were excluded due to insufficient information. Consequently, 25 articles with 27 studies including 2,693 patients with cancer and 3,040 healthy controls were included in meta‐analysis for pooling SMD analysis (Assiri, Kamel, & Hassanien, ; Chen et al, ; Chen et al, ;; Dalamaga et al, ; El‐Benhawy, El Moneim, & Ebeid, ; Fazeli et al, , ; Gąsiorowska et al, ; Ilhan et al, ; Li et al, ; Lu, Wang, Xia, & Qian, ; Luhn et al, ; Nakajima et al, , , ; Nergiz Avcioglu et al, ; Rodrigo et al, ; Suga et al, ; Sun et al, ; Tian et al, ; Tsai et al, ; Tulubas, Mete, Oznur, & Topcu, ; Yu‐Duan et al, ; Zekri, Bakr, Ezzat, Zakaria, & Elbaz, ; Zhang et al, ). Of these, 12 publications with 14 studies, provided data for ORs, were also included in our secondary meta‐analysis to estimate pooled ORs with 95% CIs (Assiri et al, ; Chen et al, ; Chen et al, ; El‐Benhawy et al, ; Luhn et al, ; Nakajima et al, , , ; Rodrigo et al, ; Tian et al, ; Tsai et al, ; Yu‐Duan et al, ).…”

“…Further, after full-text reviewing, 13 papers were excluded as they failed to meet our predefined inclusion criteria, leaving 31 eligible papers for meta-analysis in this study. 5 13 , 22 43 Thereof, 16 papers provided data by cancer type, gender or race, and so there were 48 qualified studies.…”

“… 6 8 By contrast, other researchers failed to confirm this claim, 9 11 and some of them even found a higher concentration of circulating total adiponectin in patients with colorectal cancer than in controls. 12 , 13 Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have summarized published data involving the association between circulating total adiponectin and colorectal cancer risk, 14 20 while interpretation of pooled findings in most cases is clouded by the presence of substantial heterogeneity and none considered adiponectin fractions as separate factors. With growing epidemiological data, our understanding on circulating adiponectin and its fractions and colorectal cancer needs replenishment and renewal.…”

“…Some studies have shown acceptable diagnostic value on the part of circulating visfatin levels for the detection of early CRC (sensitivity= 68.2% and specificity=70.8%, AUC=0.812)[32] and postmenopausal breast cancer (sensitivity= 97.6% and specificity=92.6%, AUC=0.724)[33]. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the potential diagnostic value of serum visfatin levels for HCC.…”
