Circulating microRNA-144-5p is associated with depressive disorders

Abstract: Background: Depressive/anxiety disorders are the most common types of mental illnesses in the world. The present study was the first to explore the association between plasma microRNAs (miRNAs) and depression/anxiety in primary care patients.

“…miR‐144‐5p, first discovered to be a potential biomarker of follicular thyroid cancer, may also be a regulatory factor in various disease, including metabolic disease (metabolic syndrome and diabetes), malignant tumour (non‐small‐cell lung cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer, oesophageal carcinoma and gastric cancer), inflammatory diseases (tuberculosis, obesity and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), Alzheimer's disease, depressive disorders and coronary syndrome . miR‐144‐5p inhibited antibacterial autophagy and the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis via repressing DNA damage‐regulated autophagy modulator 2, which is a coordinator of antimicrobial autophagy …”

“…Sharma et al found that the downregulation of miR-142, a hematopoietic-specific miRNA [34], is a critical element of cardiac adaptive hypertrophy in response to hemodynamic stress [35]. Wang et al studied miR-144, found in blood and a broad range of tissues [36,37], and found that loss of the miR-144/451 cluster limits ischemic preconditioning-mediated cardioprotection [38]. These studies support our finding that the downregulation of miR-126-5p, 142-5p, and 144-5p may be associated with chronic HF.…”

“…miR-144-5p has been studied in various cancers such as renal cell carcinoma (34) and miR-144-5p has also been studied in chronic periodontitis (35). A previous study demonstrated that circulating miR-144-5p was associated with depressive disorders (36). However, the role and mechanism of miR-144-5p in atherosclerosis remains unclear.…”
