The most reliable way to know the contribution of research to the world knowledgebase is through publication and citation data. The research papers and doctoral theses are the instruments through which results of the research are communicated to the outside world. Both these scholarly publications conclude with the list of references. The study of these references (citations) gives an idea about the development of any research topic or a researcher and also indicates the kind of literature referred by the researchers. In today's world of ever escalating cost of serials, citation analysis is also being used to determine which titles to purchase and which ones to discontinue. The present study aims to better understand and manage the library resources by examining the resources used (cited) by the doctoral students of the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) during 1997-2006. It was found that electronic format was preferred to the printed format from 2001 through 2006. Journal articles are used (cited) the most, followed by books and other documents like proceedings and reports. With more and more availability of online resources, use of non-subscribed content was also on the rise from 1997 through 2006. This study also confirms the Bradford's law that a set of core journals in a subject field satisfy more than 50% of the total number of journal citations.

Citation Analysis of Masters Theses: as a Tool for Collection Development in Academic Libraries

This study analyses the citations of Masters Theses on Sociology at the University of Peradeniya submitted from 1995 to 2012 to determine the format and age of materials used and most frequently cited journals. The citation analysis method was used as the data collection method and the citations were extracted from the title pages and reference lists of each of the theses. Data obtained from 12 masters theses were examined in June, 2013. The study found that 56% of cited items were monographs followed by 22% were journals, 8.5% were reports, 4% were web resources and 3.7% were conference proceedings. This is contrary with other citation analysis, which found that journals are the most frequently used format. The study also revealed that nine journal titles are the most frequently cited journals by sociology graduates. The study indicated that the average age of materials used was 10-20 years. The findings and implications of the research for collection development have been discussed. This study could serve as a collection development tool that can be used as a model for the library to identify the primary sources for acquisitions and also as a guide for collection maintenance.

This paper examines the literature used by Postgraduate Agricultural students of Ahmadu Bello University, to identify the core journals they used. It also checked to see if the materials identified from this exercise are available in the Agricultural Library. The hundred theses were randomly picked and the citations in the theses were analyzed to arrive at the findings. Thirty two periodical titles were identified as core and these have a total of 2582 (50.645) of periodicals cited. All the core titles were found in the holding of the Library. There were 24 Nigerian Agricultural titles representing 3.29 percent of the 728 total numbers of titles. All the 24 Nigerian agricultural titles have a cumulative total of 201 citations among them. This represents 3.94 percent of the total periodical citation which is 5098. This study shows that the Agricultural Library is quite adequate in supporting the information needs of Post-graduate students in as much as the most frequently cited (or core) journals are concerned. All thirty-two most frequently cited or core journals are held by the Library.
