Citation analysis of otorhinolaryngology journals

Abstract: Bibliometric analysis is used to assess the 'impact' of scientific journals. The commonest method of evaluation is impact factor. The aim of this study was to analyse the citation data for otorhinolaryngology journals of the years 1994 to 1998. Data on the total number of citations and impact factor of journals was obtained from the CD-ROM editions 1994-98 of the Journal Citation Reports and 'Web of Science' database. The adjusted impact factor and five-year impact factor has been calculated. Fifteen otorhinol… Show more

“…The reporting of this type of citation analysis is widespread in the medical literature [1, 3, 4, 10, 11, 13, 16-18, 20, 21, 23, 27, 28, 30]. The establishment of a citation rank list across a specialty, comprising many journals specific to an area of medicine, is a more complex process than citation analysis for one journal, although such analyses have been reported in some other areas of medicine [1,3,4,21,23,27].…”

“…In addition to determining the most frequently cited articles, this analysis is also used to rank journals in terms of impact. Multiple medical fields have used a rank list to determine the impact of articles and journals within its specialty, such as otolaryngology [1,2], emergency medicine [3,4], dermatology [5][6][7], general surgery [8], trauma surgery [9], plastic surgery [10], physical medicine and rehabilitation [11], urology [12], ophthalmology [13], obstetrics and gynecology [14], critical care [15,16], anesthesiology [17], neurosurgery [18], orthopedics [19][20][21], pediatric orthopedics [22], and orthopedic trauma [23]. However, to date, no analysis has been made for those in spine care.…”

“…The recent development and topic of general interest of a discipline could be found out by means of the distribution of research topics, authors, and institutes of the author of certain journal about a discipline. We can realize things such as research in tropical medicine, otorhinolaryngology and clinical medicine (Fava 2001, Roy 2002, Schoonbaert 2004. Tropical medicine is a rising and fast-growing subject; which focuses on the research and treatment of diseases related to parasitology, tropical medical microbiology; infectious and non-infectious diseases, clinical diseases of the tropics.…”
