Monitoring of cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems is a complex task, which is time consuming and expensive due to the chaotic population dynamics and highly heterogeneous distribution of cyanobacteria populations in water bodies. The financial cost constitutes a strong limitation for the implementation of long-term monitoring programs in developing countries, particularly in Africa. The work presented here was performed in the framework of an international project addressing the sustainable monitoring and management of surface water resources used for the production of drinking water in three African countries. We tested the potential of a citizen approach for monitoring cyanobacterial blooms, which are a growing threat to the drinking water supply. This pilot study was designed, implemented and evaluated in close interaction with the Pasteur Institute of the Ivory Coast and with the populations of three villages located on the shoreline of a freshwater lagoon located near Abidjan city. Based on the use of a smartphone application, the citizens of the three villages were invited to report water color changes, as these changes could reflect cyanobacteria proliferations. A two-year experimentation period has shown that it is possible to mobilize the local populations to monitor cyanobacterial blooms. The data collected by citizens were consistent with the data obtained by a classical monitoring of cyanobacteria performed over seven months, but it appeared that new approaches were needed to validate the citizen data. This participatory approach also provided great improvements to the understanding and awareness of local populations regarding water quality and cyanobacterial bloom issues. Finally, we discuss some of the difficulties and limitations of our participatory monitoring approach that should be considered by further implementations. Despite these difficulties, our work

Apesar das áreas protegidas serem ferramentas estratégicas para a conservação dos recursos naturais, sua gestão pode ser desafiadora em países com um alto índice de desigualdade social, grandes extensões territoriais e alta biodiversidade, somado à falta de financiamento e problemas institucionais. Nesse contexto, estabelecer uma metodologia que possa vincular a sociedade ao monitoramento e conservação dessas áreas é fundamental em termos sociais, ambientais e econômicos. Assim, esta pesquisa teve por objetivo propor recomendações para a implementação de um monitoramento ambiental de cavernas situadas em Unidades de Conservação com base nos princípios e diretrizes da ciência cidadã. A presente pesquisa empregou três métodos principais para atingir os objetivos propostos. A primeira etapa consistiu em uma (a) Revisão Bibliográfica Sistemática (RBS) para obter uma lista de boas práticas sobre a Ciência Cidadã no monitoramento ambiental. Essas informações foram utilizadas para estruturar a coleta de dados por meio de (b) questionários direcionados à especialistas da área, de modo a verificar a viabilidade dessa abordagem. Este estudo analisou 60 artigos internacionais e contou com a participação de 19 pesquisadores vinculados a instituições brasileiras de ensino e/ou pesquisa. Os resultados das etapas a e b passaram por uma (c) análise de conteúdo com o propósito de sistematizar os resultados para sugerir recomendações finais. Em sua maioria, as respostas dadas pelos pesquisadores foram ao encontro do que foi observado em estudos anteriores sobre ciência cidadã, apresentando adaptações para o contexto de monitoramento ambiental das atividades de uso público em cavernas brasileiras, tal como recomendações e desafios que não constaram na revisão bibliográfica sistemática.Palavras-chaves: parques; monitoramento participativo; ambientes subterrâneos; uso público.

Climate-induced variation in lake level can affect physicochemical properties of endorheic lakes, but its consequences for phototrophic production and regime shifts are not well understood. Here, we quantified changes in the abundance and community composition of phototrophs in Kenosee and White Bear lakes, two endorheic basins in the parkland Moose Mountain uplands of southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada, which have experienced > 8 m declines in water level since $ 1900. We hypothesized that lower water levels and warmer temperatures should manifest as increased abundance of phytoplankton, particularly cyanobacteria, and possibly trigger a regime shift to turbid conditions due to evaporative concentration of nutrients and solutes. High-resolution analysis of sedimentary pigments revealed an increase in total phototrophic abundance (as β-carotene) concurrent with lake-level decline beginning $ 1930, but demonstrated little directional change in cyanobacteria. Instead, significant increases in obligately anaerobic purple sulfur bacteria (as okenone) occurred in both lakes during $ 1930-1950, coeval with alterations to light environments and declines in lake level. The presence of okenone suggests that climate-induced increases in solute concentrations may have favored the formation of novel bacterial habitats where photic and anoxic zones overlapped. Generalized additive models showed that establishment of this unique habitat was likely preceded by increased temporal variance of sulfur bacteria, but not phytoplankton or cyanobacteria, suggesting that this abrupt change to physical lake structure was unique to deepwater environments. Such climate-induced shifts may become more frequent in the region due to hydrological stress on lake levels due to warming temperatures across the Northern Great Plains.
