Citizen Science Practices for Computational Social Science Research: The Conceptualization of Pop-Up Experiments

Abstract: Under the name of Citizen Science, many innovative practices in which volunteers partner up with scientists to pose and answer real-world questions are growing rapidly worldwide. Citizen Science can furnish ready-made solutions with citizens playing an active role. However, this framework is still far from being well established as a standard tool for computational social science research. Here, we present our experience in bridging gap between computational social science and the philosophy underlying Citizen… Show more

“…However, the fields of the social and behavioural sciences 51 are still a quite unexplored area under the principles of citizen science. Despite very different perspectives 40,50,[52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60] , some authors are therefore advocating for the combination of citizen science principles with social sciences for the research to be applied to, and in line with, societal concerns.…”

“…The substantial investment of time and resources impedes timely image processing, causing delay between the data collection and interpretation stages, which may be detrimental to ecological management (Fox, Bourn et al 2019). Furthermore, the need to upload large amounts of data onto publicly accessible websites may pose privacy risks (Sagarra, Gutiérrez-Roig et al 2015) or poaching concerns and undermine the protection of rare or endangered species by revealing their geographical location and behavioural habits to poachers (Falzon, Lawson et al 2020).…”

“…The so-called field of Computational Social Science (Lazer et al, 2009) can be considered as an interesting research frame for establishing a synergistic relationship with Citizen Science practices (Sagarra et al, 2016). Computational Social Science refers to the academic sub-disciplines concerned with computational approaches to the Social Sciences and focuses on investigating social interactions through simulation, modelling, network analysis, and media analysis (Salganik, 2018) .…”

“…Late 2014 and in the frame of a meeting on public participation in research, we started an informal discussion with the board director of the Catalonia Mental Health Federation (Federació Salut Mental Catalunya, FSMC). The starting point was based on the research we already developed on human behaviour in places like Barcelona Board Game Festival or Barcelona streets (Gutiérrez-Roig et al, 2014;Poncela-Casasnovas et al, 2016;Sagarra et al, 2016;Vicens et al, 2017) . We jointly hypothesized that, within the field of Computational Social Science, public and collective experimentation based on social dilemmas could also be used for research purposes on Community Mental Health Care.…”
