Citric acid, but not tetracycline, improves the microscopic pattern of healing of particulate autogenous bone grafts in critical‐size defects

Abstract: Background: Bone demineralization has shown to be advantageous in autogenous onlay bone grafts and in pre-osteoblasts cultures, but such procedure has never been evaluated in particulate bone grafts. This study aimed to investigate the role of two demineralizing agents in the repair of the 8-mm critical-size defects in rats' calvaria. Methods: Eighty adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of eight groups as follows: particulate autogenous bone demineralized with citric acid for 15 seconds (CA15),… Show more

“… 39 In recent years, researchers have conducted several studies on the application of TTC in the repair of periodontitis-related bone defects, yielding significant advances. 40 For instance, studies have demonstrated that TTC can alleviate the symptoms of periodontitis by exerting anti-inflammatory effects and facilitating localized tissue repair. 41 TTC can inhibit inflammatory responses and cartilage resorption, thereby mitigating the infiltration and destruction of inflammatory cells and consequently mitigating bone destruction and bone defects.…”

“…RB provides a stable substrate that is devoid of contaminants, acts as a chemotactic attractant for fibroblasts, eliminating the toxic substances that inhibit the proliferation and attachment of gingival fibroblasts to the root surface, enabling new connective tissue attachment formation or regeneration. [ 4 5 ] Although various RB agents, including citric acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), fibronectin, and antibiotics such as tetracyclines and LASERs, have been widely tested, citric acid and EDTA have been most widely accepted in clinical use. [ 6 7 8 9 10 11 ] Citric acid is effective against smear layer removal and is found to have strong antimicrobial properties; however, it lacks chemical stability necessary for regenerative potential.…”
