Citriculture Economic and Financial Evaluation Under Conditions of Uncertainty

Abstract: -The citriculture consists in several environmental risks, as weather changes and pests, and also consists in considerable financial risk, mainly due to the period of return on the initial investment. This study was motivated by the need to assess the risks of a business activity such as citriculture. Our objective was to build a stochastic simulation model to achieve the economic and financial analysis of an orange producer in the Midwest region of the state of Sao Paulo, under conditions of uncertainty. “…Five risks (in decreasing order of importance) showed up clearly from the results (Table 2): climatic events, sale prices, yield, amount to market and variability in currency exchange rate. The ranking of sources of risk in decreasing order shows that, as suggested by the most recent literature, the growers consider the climatic events as the most important source of risk (MARTIN, 1996;GREINER et al, 2008;KUNDZEWICZ;OLESEN et al, 2011;SMRKULJ;NJAVRO, 2016;SULEWSKI;KŁOCZKO-GAJEWSKA, 2014). The sources of risk that the growers perceive as the most important ones are also consistent with the international experience.…”

“…The biological and climatic nature of the agricultural production implies that the growers operate in an environment of greater risk and uncertainty than other economic activities (AĞIR et al, 2015;ULLAH et al, 2015a). This could compromise economic viability of the crops (SIMÕES et al, 2015). In fact, according to ULLAH et al (2015b), weather is an important production factor in agriculture and this production factor can hardly be controlled.…”

“…Furthermore, phenological data can also be used to help predict interannual changes in tree phenology (PETRI et al, 2008). Thus, knowledge of the timing of phenological events and their variability can help producers obtain more stable crop yields and quality, thereby reducing environmental risks (GARIGLIO et al, 2012;SIMÕES et al, 2015).…”
