CKD in Hispanics: Baseline Characteristics From the CRIC (Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort) and Hispanic-CRIC Studies

Abstract: Background Little is known regarding chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Hispanics. We compared baseline characteristics of Hispanic participants in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) and Hispanic-CRIC (H-CRIC) Studies with non-Hispanic CRIC participants. Study Design Cross-sectional analysis Setting and Participants Participants were aged 21–74 years with CKD using age-based glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at enrollment into the CRIC/H-CRIC Studies. H-CRIC included Hispanics recruited at the Univ… Show more

“…Major eligibility criteria for the CRIC Study included adults ages 21-74 years old with mild to moderate CKD using age-based eGFR on the basis of the fourvariable Modification of Diet in Renal Disease estimating equation (15). Aside from recruiting only participants of Hispanic ethnicity, the H-CRIC Study adopted eligibility and exclusion criteria identical to the CRIC Study (16 (17). Participants from the CRIC and H-CRIC Studies comprise the cohort for these analyses.…”

“…Adult participants (n=3612) age 21-74 years with an age-stratified estimated GFR (eGFR) of 20-70 ml/min per 1.73 m 2 at the screening visit were enrolled. To have adequate representation of ethnic minorities, blacks were oversampled, and the ancillary Hispanic CRIC (HCRIC) study enrolled 327 additional Hispanic participants (15). Participants were excluded for pregnancy, New York Heart Association class III-IV heart failure, HIV infection, cirrhosis, myeloma, renal cancer, recent chemotherapy or immunosuppressive therapy, polycystic kidney disease, organ transplantation, or previous treatment with dialysis for at least 1 month.…”

“…[15][16][17] The CRIC Study recruited 3939 adults from May 2003 to June 2008, aged 21-74 years, with mild to moderate CKD from general medicine and specialty clinics at seven clinical centers across the U.S. (Ann Arbor, Michigan; Baltimore, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois; Cleveland, Ohio; New Orleans, Louisiana; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Oakland, California). Participants were followed with annual in-clinic visits and interim telephone contact.…”

“…Exclusion criteria included inability to consent, institutionalization, pregnancy, and certain chronic conditions. [15][16][17] The study protocol was approved by Institutional Review Boards of participating centers and is in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. All study participants provided written informed consent.…”
