Clarifying conditions and decision points for mediational type inferences in Organizational Behavior

Abstract: SummaryAlthough mediational designs and analyses are quite popular in Organizational Behavior research, there is much confusion surrounding the basis of causal inferences. We review theoretical, research design, and construct validity issues that are important for drawing inferences from mediational analyses. We then distinguish between indirect effects, and partial and full mediational hypotheses and outline decision points for drawing inferences of each type. An empirical illustration is provided using struc… Show more

“…In the second study, perceived job autonomy was not significantly related to the work performance measures. Still, the significant drops in standardized betas after the inclusion of intrinsic motivation suggest an indirect relationship (Mathieu & Taylor, 2006). That is, perceived job autonomy increases intrinsic motivation, which in turn enhances work effort and work quality.…”

“…A condition for mediation (Mathieu and Taylor, 2006) by psychological empowerment is that the innovation requirements are positively associated with psychological empowerment. As displayed in Table II, before estimating the models for individual innovation, psychological empowerment was tested as the dependent variable (Hox, 2010 (level 2).…”

“…To examine whether engagement mediated the hypothesized relationships, we followed the steps outlined by Mathieu and Taylor (2006). The procedure compares three alternative models: saturated, direct effects, and indirect effects models.…”
