Background: Human populations develop locally-based knowledge about the species used as firewood through the use of natural resources, and by experimenting with cultural guidelines and transmitting their experiencies. In the selection and use of firewood this knowledge is mainly based on the igneous properties of each species. This study was carried out in rural settlements and indigenous populations of the province of Misiones, Argentina. We surveyed combustion properties and local categories of firewood classification. We analyzed the most relevant characteristics of the firewood obtained from different species and the multiple applications assigned to it according to local criteria. We recorded the origin of the species used as fuel and their selection criteria, the vernacular nomenclature and the descriptor elements of the firewood qualities. Based on them we identified classification categories. Methods:The information was obtained through semi-structured interviews, free lists and participant observation.Results: Through Principal Component Analysis, we established groups of species associated with combustion properties or attributes and identified the emerging criteria that associate them. There were 21 species preferred, most of them native. Differences were observed in the frequency of firewood collection by the two groups, with more frequent activity among the indigenous. In both groups, wood usually comes from dry, medium to large individuals. They both select, use and prefer species whose main attributes as firewood are duration of the embers, intensity of the flames and low emission of smoke. Conclusions:The tudy of classification system provides key information and broadens knowledge of the semantic corpus involved in their perception and practices.

El componente florístico-pecuario que integra a los agroecosistemas en Unidades de Producción Familiar (UPF) fomenta la riqueza sociocultural. Se identificó el valor de importancia cultural florístico-pecuario mediante la caracterización, para proponer buenas prácticas de manejo productivo. Para ello de octubre de 2021 a enero de 2022 se aplicaron entrevistas semiestructuradas y recorridos de campo. Se caracterizaron las UPF, prácticas-culturales, rendimiento, precios de venta, tipo de uso, arreglo-distribución espacial y variables físico-ambientales. Asimismo, se detectaron ingresos económicos externos que contribuyen a la economía familiar. Se aplicó índice de importancia cultural (IC), análisis de componentes principales (ACP), Kruskal-Wallis, prueba Tukey y diagrama de Hart. Se registraron dos tipos de agroecosistema, con una pendiente que varió entre 5 y 35 % y temperatura ambiental mínima-máxima de 21.2 °C y 26.3 °C, respectivamente. Las UPF se integraron en mayor porcentaje por adultos mayores con primaria inconclusa. El cultivo de milpa (maíz-frijol-calabaza) tuvo un rendimiento promedio de 244.5 kg de maíz y 33.5 kg de frijol. Se registraron 97 especies florísticas útiles y 14 usos de las mismas. El arreglo florístico espacial fue aleatorio, uniforme y semi-uniforme. El IC florístico-pecuario registró valores altos para: Persea americana (4.5), Phaseolus vulgaris (3.0), Prunus pérsica (3.7) y Zea mays (4.3); pollos (2.3), guajolotes (0.9), patos (0.9) y cerdos (0.9), respectivamente. El ACP florístico-pecuario mostró mayor correlación como: soporte vivo, obtención de frutos y leña; obtención de carne, huevos, como obsequio, cría y abono. A pesar de los problemas económico-migratorios del área evaluada aún preserva el uso cultural florístico-pecuario.

Background: The processes of change and continuity in the practices associated with the use of firewood by the inhabitants of the Biosphere Reserve Parque Costero del Sur (PCS -acronym in Spanish) and its surroundings are analysed diachronically.Methods: Anthracological, ethnobotany historical and ethnobotanical methodology have been used.Results: In the pre-hispanic period, hunter-gatherer groups used the native species of the talar (coronillo, molle, tala and sombra de toro) and the coast (ceibo and willow), possibly as a source of light, heat, protection, in pottery production and food preparation. Subsequently, the native societies on the frontier continued to use the native species of the talar (tala, molle and sombra de toro) as firewood, with no recorded use of coastal species. Historical documentation reflects the continued use of talar trees as firewood since the colonial period, and even their overexploitation, in addition to the early introduction of exotic species for this purpose. Today, firewood continues to be a key resource in the daily lives of the inhabitants of the PCS for heating and cooking. The use of 28 species was recorded, of which six are native (tala, coronillo, molle, willow, espinillo and brusquilla). Conclusions:The results presented demonstrate the temporal continuity in the use of some native species as firewood with varying degrees of intensity and the incorporation of exotic species since the colonial period. This reflects the flexibility of the settlers in the face of socio-environmental changes, with innovations and transfers of uses from one plant to another that have enriched local practices.
