Class and Conformity: Thirty Years of Adult Child‐rearing Values in the U.S

Abstract: This paper investigates trends in adult child‐rearing values in the United States over a 30‐year period, from the mid‐1980s into the first decades of the 21st century. Using data from the General Social Surveys, we report trends in emphasis on five child traits: think for self, obey, work hard, popularity, and helping others. Independent of the time of the surveys, child‐rearing values are associated with several individual attributes: gender, schooling level, occupational class, birth year, race/ethnicity, re… Show more

“…Future studies may benefit from further revealing the complexity inherent within the tested associations by considering various alternative risk factors and also resilience moderators (Masarik et al, 2016). Last, according to the work by Duane F. Alwin and others (e.g., Alwin, 2001 ; Alwin & Tufiș, 2021 ; Park & Lau, 2016 ), SES also greatly shapes parents’ child-rearing values and thus is associated with parenting priorities concerning child socialization (e.g., obedience versus autonomy). As such, in addition to the currently tested authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles, parental childrearing values could be one of the critical, alternative mechanisms that are also implicated in the association between family SES and child psychopathology.…”

“…Contemporary parents tend to have childrearing values that favor autonomy over obedience, and this represents a continuation of social change in values and norms occurring during the previous century (Alwin and Tufis , 2021). The present study makes empirical and theoretical contributions to understanding how such values affect family dynamics and parent-child relationships during the 21st century.…”

“…Several general predictions can be made on using existing theory and research. Findings that parental attitudes favor autonomy over obedience (Alwin and Tufis , 2021) suggest that contemporary parents, particularly in individualistic cultures, may tolerate, if not encourage, children's opposition to their instructions under some circumstances. In addition, parents may have competing goals when confronted with resistance from children besides compliance.…”

“…2012). Studies also show a link between religious identification and the valuation of obedience versus autonomy in children (Alwin and Tufis 2021; Ellison and Sherkat 1993b; Starks and Robinson 2005), and these childrearing values have long been tied to stratification outcomes (Kohn 1989). A well‐developed body of literature has linked fundamentalist Christian beliefs and connections to exclusivist sectarian Protestant denominations to a variety of negative stratification outcomes (cf.…”
