Classical and alternative disinfection strategies to control the COVID-19 virus in healthcare facilities: a review

Abstract: The coronavirus disease COVID-19 has spread throughout the world and has been declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11th, 2020. The COVID-19 is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). One possible mode of virus transmission is through surfaces in the healthcare settings. This paper reviews currently used disinfection strategies to control SARS-CoV-2 at the healthcare facilities. Chemical disinfectants include hypochlorite, peroxymonosulfate, alcoho… Show more

“…Disinfectants are chemical agents that are specifically formulated to inactivate or destroy microorganisms and include various classes, such as detergents, acids, oxidizing agents, alcohols, alkalis, aldehydes, biguanides, halogens, phenols, and quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) (FDA 2020a; Choi et al 2021). Chemical disinfectants vary in their action mechanism, and the majority of disinfectants of a chemical nature target the outer lipid layer of coronaviruses (CoVs) and inactivate the viral particles (Choi et al 2021). However, variations among the mechanisms of chemical disinfectants have been recorded.…”

“…Teknologi disinfeksi permukaan benda yang banyak digunakan untuk mencegah penularan SARS-CoV-2 adalah penyemprotan dengan larutan disinfektan, dan aplikasi sinar UV (Choi et al 2021). Penyemprotan larutan disinfektan seperti hipoklorit dan peroksida di berbagai fasilitas umum untuk mencegah penularan SARS-CoV-2 dalam prakteknya banyak dilakukan secara manual.…”

“…The outbreak of novel coronavirus disease 2019 global pandemic has affected billions of lives, posing critical challenges to the health care system, vaccine manufacturers, packaging scientists, and daily public activity (Chen et al 2021;Choi et al 2021a;Fauci et al 2020). The virus, popularly known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has been affecting the whole world for more than a year (Choi et al 2021b;Han et al 2021). The name SARS-CoV-2 was provided by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (Wang et al 2020).…”
