PurposeThe aim of this paper is to synthesize knowledge related to performance evaluation of automated construction processes during the planning and execution phases through a theme-based literature classification. The primary research question that is addressed is “How to quantify the performance improvement in automated construction processes?”Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review of papers on automated construction was conducted involving three stages-planning, conducting and reporting. In the planning stage, the purpose of the review is established through key research questions. Then, a four-step process is employed consisting of identification, screening, shortlisting and inclusion of papers. For reporting, observations were critically analysed and categorized according to themes.FindingsThe primary conclusion from this study is that the effectiveness of construction processes can only be benchmarked using realistic simulations. Simulations help to pinpoint the root causes of success or failure of projects that are either already completed or under execution. In automated construction, there are many complex interactions between humans and machines; therefore, detailed simulation models are needed for accurate predictions. One key requirement for simulation is the calibration of the models using real data from construction sites.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is based on a review of 169 papers from a database of peer-reviewed journals, within a time span of 50 years.Originality/valueGap in research in the area of performance evaluation of automated construction is brought out. The importance of simulation models calibrated with on-site data within a methodology for performance evaluation is highlighted.

Earthwork scheduling (during the planning phase of road construction) is an important task that directly affects the cost and time of a project. However, the current scheduling methods are not performed at a detailed level and carry forward gaps from the actual schedule in the construction stage, causing problems, including time delays and additional costs, during the construction stage and thereby leading to the modification and supplementation of existing plans. Many studies related to scheduling have focused on process optimization or automation; therefore, the gaps between the planning and construction stages have not been studied well. These gaps must be determined in advance to solve the fundamental problem of earthwork scheduling in road construction. Therefore, this study proposes a detailed activity-based scheduling model for earthwork at the planning stage to minimize the gap between the planned schedule and the actual process at the construction stage. The proposed model comprises a detailed activity-based database of earthwork in road construction (DADER), which enables the subdivision of the existing earthwork schedule plan, and a dynamic programming (DP) procedure, which enables the combination of activities. The earthwork schedule at the case site, planned for only three activities, is subdivided using DADER into 36 activities. Additionally, the DP procedure is used to derive a combination of activity alternatives that minimizes the cost among the conditions that satisfied the input target duration. The model is verified through an expert survey using a 7-point Likert scale. Results show that the model has cost efficiency (4.19), onsite applicability (4.70), and task efficiency (4.48). The findings indicate that performing scheduling during the planning stage of earthwork projects can help reduce additional work caused by the gap between the site and the plan. This study will help improve the productivity of road construction projects by providing correct process optimization and automation research data.

In modern times, with the development of industrialized society and the invention of clocks and watches, people have become more and more concerned about institutionalization, and higher education time and space have also shown the characteristics of institutionalization. In modern times, educational informatization has brought challenges and opportunities for educational reform and development. The vigorous development of education informatization has also produced changes in higher education spatiotemporally. For example, the rise of catechism and online learning, the importance of fragmented time, the development of space toward virtualization, and the expansion of interactive space for interpersonal interactions. In addition, the enrichment and sharing of educational materials, the informatization, and big data of educational management also contribute to the improvement of time efficiency and optimization of time structure in higher education. With the background of education under the new normal, this paper briefly analyzes the current situation of education informatization construction in colleges and universities from the perspective of education managers, and addresses the current situation and problems of teaching management informatization construction, such as organizational structure dominated by pyramidal functional departments, inefficiency, inability to connect work, difficulty in work gap, difficulty in horizontal coordination, and closed information. A work breakdown structure (WBS) based project management theory and work structure decomposition method are proposed. This paper finds that the improved association rule mining algorithm can improve the efficiency of teaching management practice in colleges and universities by more than 14.58%, which is an important reference value for college management informatization.
