Classification of 1,198 Cases of Bovine Lymphoma Using the National Cancer Institute Working Formulation for Human Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas

Abstract: Abstract. A retrospective histologic study was made of 1,198 cases of bovine lymphoma using the National Cancer Institute Working Formulation for human non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This classification scheme was found to be readily applicable to bovine lymphoma. Most of the cell types described in the National Cancer Institute Working Formulation occurred in this series of bovine lymphomas, but the distribution of cell types varied markedly compared to that of human beings. Eighty-nine percent (1,067/1,198) of bovi… Show more

“…In previous reports of enzootic bovine leukosis 20,21 , the cytological classifications were primarily based on tumor cell size, which can cause difficulties in classifying enzootic bovine leukosis from other leukoses. Similar to the reports for pleomorphic B cell lymphoma 1,9,13. , in this study the main cytological findings from cases 1-16 were pleomorphism and atypia, which are not so prominent in other histological types of lymphoid neoplasms 1,2,[6][7][8][9][10]13,14,17,18 .…”

“…Numerous bovine lymphoid neoplasms were classified using the National Cancer Institute Working Formulation for human lymphomas. Via this classification system the cleaved variant of the diffuse large cell type has been shown to constitute 38% of enzootic lymphomas versus 14% of sporadic lymphomas 20 . Yin et al 21 examined 47 cases of enzootic and sporadic leukosis, which were divided into four histological types: lymphocytic; well-differentiated prolymphocytic; poorly-differentiated prolymphocytic; and histiocytic.…”

“…T-cell lymphoma tended to predominate in the small intestine, and this finding is supported by a recent report that identified the origin of these tumors as the diffuse mucosaassociated lymphoid tissue of the small intestine. 26 Since its original development for the characterization of human non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the NCI WF 1 has been used successfully to characterize lymphomas in cattle, [43][44][45] dogs, 5 and cats 40 and to predict the clinical course of disease (indolent, intermediate-grade, and high-grade or rapidly progressive 1 ) with reasonable accuracy in these species. 3 Although the NCI WF is relatively simple to apply to histologic sections through a dichotomous algorithm, 5 the most accurate predictive models, particularly for tumors of small (mature) cell types, requires an integration of both mitotic rate and cell type.…”
