Background Alcohol use disorder is the major public health problem in low- and middle-income countries that account for up to 70% of alcohol related premature mortality in the region. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of alcohol use disorder and its associated factors among adult residents in south Gondar zone, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 848 adult residents of the south Gondar zone from January 13 to February 13, 2020. A multistage sampling technique was used to recruit study participants. We assessed alcohol use disorder (AUD) using the alcohol use disorder identification test (AUDIT). A binary logistic regression model was employed to identify factors associated with AUD. Results The prevalence of alcohol use disorder over the last 12-months was found to be 23.7% (95% CI: 20.9, 26.7). Being male (AOR = 4.34, 95 CI; 2.800, 6.743), poor social support (AOR = 1.95, 95 CI: 1.098, 3.495), social phobia (AOR = 1.69, 95 CI; 1.117, 2.582), perceived high level of stress (AOR = 2.85, 95 CI; 1.829, 34.469), current cigarette smoking (AOR = 3.06, 95 CI; 1.764, 5.307) and comorbid depression (AOR = 1.81, 95 CI; 1.184, 2.778) were significantly associated with alcohol use disorder. Conclusion The prevalence of alcohol use disorder is high among adult residents of the south Gondar zone and associated with many factors. So, it needs public health attention to decrease the magnitude of alcohol use disorder in Ethiopia.

BackgroundThere is a rapid shift in the social context of drinking, with a large proportion of regular drinkers favouring outdoor-open space drinking, such as motor-parks, by the road sides, the majority of which are unlicensed premises for drinking.MethodThis study determined the prevalence and determinants of harmful or hazardous alcohol use and possible dependence, defined as a “likely alcohol use disorder” (AUD) in a community sample of 1119 patrons of open space drinking places in Ibadan, Nigeria, using the AUDIT. Scores of 8 and above signified a likely AUD. The associations between a likely AUD and demographic characteristics were sought using Chi square statistics and binary regression analysis was used to determine the effects of multiple confounding variables on a likely AUD using the SPSS version 20.0 software.ResultsOf the entire population, the prevalence of likely AUD was 39.5%, and 44.4% out of the drinking population Multivariate analysis showed that Islamic religion was a negative predictor for likely AUD, OR = 0.13, 95% CI (0.06–0.26), while rural residence, OR = 1.84, 95% CI (1.34–2.53) and cigarette smoking OR = 1.81, 95% CI (1.37–2.40) were predictive of likely AUD.ConclusionOutdoor-open space drinkers are likely to have AUD compared with the general population. Open space drinking has a huge public health implication because of the associated health risks and injuries.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effectiveness of a web-based intervention in reducing binge drinking among nightclub patrons after six months.METHODSWe carried out a website survey with probabilistic sample in 31 nightclubs in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, which originated a randomized controlled trial with 1,057 participants. Those classified as problem drinkers (n = 465) using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test were randomized into two study groups – intervention and control. The web-based intervention consisted of exposing the participants to a normative feedback screen about their alcohol consumption, characterizing the risks associated with amount consumed, money spent on drinks, drinking and driving, risk classification of Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, and tips to reduce damage.RESULTSThere was a significant reduction in the practice of binge drinking in the week estimated at 38% among participants in the intervention group after six months (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant reduction in the outcomes when we analyzed the intervention and control groups and at baseline and after sixth months, simultaneously.CONCLUSIONSWe cannot conclude that digital tools reduce the pattern of binge drinking among party goers in São Paulo. More studies are needed with this methodology because of its attractiveness to this type of group, given the privacy and speed that personalized information is transmitted.

Abstract: Patrons of nightclubs show higher prevalence rates for any alcohol use disorders than the general population. Patrons could benefit from governmental brief intervention or referral to treatment for alcohol used disorders disclosed in nightclubs.
