Classification of Flotation Frothers

Abstract: Abstract:In this paper, a scheme of flotation frothers classification is presented. The scheme first indicates the physical system in which a frother is present and four of them i.e., pure state, aqueous solution, aqueous solution/gas system and aqueous solution/gas/solid system are distinguished. As a result, there are numerous classifications of flotation frothers. The classifications can be organized into a scheme described in detail in this paper. The frother can be present in one of four physical systems,… Show more

“…Therefore, the ability of a frother to prevent bubble coalescence could be evaluated based on the amount of bound water which interrupts drainage between adjacent bubbles. More detailed classification of frothers was recently given by Drzymala and Kowalczuk and by Khoshdast and Sam …”

“…classification of frothers was recently given by Drzymala and Kowalczuk [96] and by Khoshdast and Sam. [97] The technique of determining liquid film thickness around a bubble (or bound water) might provide a simple method to elucidate the effect of different types of frothers on bubble terminal velocity and gas holdup.…”

“…Both v1 and k1 are numerically identical, though the specific rate is a more informative parameter because it has a physical meaning, that is indicates the speed of the process in the form of amount of solids of the considered component in concentrate per amount of solids in the flotation cell per unit time. Other kinetic equations can also be used [13,14].…”

“…1a) provides two parameters, that is maximum recovery ( max) and a constant (v or k) along with information at what frother dose (C) they were obtained. Next, the limits flotation curve [14] can be plotted as shown in Fig. 1b.…”

“…Foam is thermodynamically unstable and dissipates through self-destructive processes due to liquid drainage, Ostwald ripening, and bubble coalescence (Carey and Stubenrauch, 2010;Wang et al, 2017). The issues of foamability and foam stability are very important for numerous industrial applications such as mineral flotation (Drzymala and Kowalczuk, 2018;Kowalczuk and Drzymala, 2017;Xing et al, 2017;Zheng et al, 2017), wastewater treatment (Bournival et al, 2014;Fruhner et al, 2000), tertiary oil recovery (Ramaswamy et al, 2007), personal care products, etc. Particularly, foam stability is known to play a significant role in determining the mineral grade and recovery efficiency in mineral-flotation operations.…”
