Classification of Left Ventricular Diastolic Function Using American Society of Echocardiography Guidelines: Agreement among Echocardiographers

Abstract: Guidelines for assessing diastolic function by echocardiography are continually being updated. Our ability to use available guidelines effectively has not been completely investigated. Six trained echocardiographers were asked to interpret 105 echocardiograms using current American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) algorithms for interpretation of diastolic grade and estimation of left atrial (LA) pressure. Diastolic grade was categorized as normal, mild, moderate, or severe dysfunction. The presence or absenc… Show more

“…However, given the relatively small sample size of that study (n = 50), we were unable to fully adjust for other potential confounders, such as kidney function and echocardiographic parameters. Additionally, it is important to note that the diagnosis of LVDD using only an altered E/e' ratio and not accounting for other echocardiographic parameters could be challenged [16,24]. To our knowledge, this is the largest cross-sectional study aimed at examining the association between NAFLD and LVDD in an outpatient sample of type 2 diabetic individuals.…”

“…Diastolic function. Left ventricular diastolic filling was determined by Doppler-derived measurements (18,19). Mitral inflow velocity was assessed using Doppler echocardiography from apical 4 chamber view, keeping the sample volume at the tips of the mitral leaflets.…”

“…Ηowever, their interpretation is based on additional echocardiographic measurements such as LV mass, ejection fraction, valvular disease and is related to age, gender and the clinical setting. As a result, diastolic echocardiographic variables are often non-concurrent and can be interpreted differently 15. The American Society of Echocardiography and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging have recently updated their guidelines in an attempt to simplify the evaluation of diastolic dysfunction and recommend a practical, standardised scheme for diagnosis and grading of diastolic dysfunction 1 16.…”
