In this study, spatiotemporal fluctuations in surface water quality in Vinh Long province, Vietnam, were conducted using entropy weighting, water quality index (WQI), and multivariate statistical techniques, such as cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), and discriminant analysis (DA). The samples collected at 63 monitoring locations in March, June, and September were measured for 15 parameters. Compared to the Vietnamese standard, surface water was contaminated with organic matters, nutrients, microorganisms, and salinity. DA identified the most typical parameters (pH, turbidity, TSS, EC, DO, Cl−, E. coli, coliform) in distinguishing temporal variations in water quality with greater than 75% of the correction. CA group 63 sampling sites into 22 clusters representing different land use patterns. WQI determined the worst water quality was found in the agricultural areas. Based on the results of entropy weighting, EC, coliform, N-NH4+, BOD, N-NO3−, and Fe had significantly controlled surface water quality. Four principal components obtained from PCA explained 66.45% of the variance, suggesting the influences of geohydrological factors and anthropogenic activities, such as domestic, market area, agriculture, and industry. The findings of this study can provide useful information for authorities to evaluate the effectiveness of monitoring systems and plan for water quality management strategies.

The present study investigated the water quality index (WQI) of the Kshipra river at Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, India, using native fish Labeo rohita, and plant Eichhornia crassipes . The temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, turbidity, and dissolved solids were found to be within the prescribed limits. However, heavy metals concentration exceeded the limit except for Cu and Zn. Their occurrence in river water was as follows: Ni > Fe > Cd > Cr > Mn > Zn > Cu. Among these heavy metals, Cd was found to be highly bioavailable, whereas Zn was the least bioavailable metal. Based on WQI, the water was found to be unfit for drinking, and the high WQI value was due to the presence of Cr and Cd. In fish tissues (muscle, liver, gut, gills, and kidney), the highest and lowest metal pollution index was found in gills (45.03) and kidneys (12.21), respectively. Bioaccumulation of these metals resulted in significant depletion of energy reserves (protein, glucose, and glycogen) and also altered hematological parameters. Moreover, liver function tests showed hepatic damage in the exposed fish. In-plant, both the bioaccumulation and mobility factor exceeded 1 for all these metals. On the other hand, the translocation factor was found to be beyond 1 for Fe, Ni, and Zn. These high values make this plant fit for phytoextraction of Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Cd and phytostabilization of Cr in water. Moreover, consumption of L. rohita from the Kshipra River does not pose a non-cancer risk as the target hazard quotient was below 1, but it may pose cancer risk because of the presence of Cr in the range of 1.402 × 10 −3 to 1.599 × 10 −3 .

Progress toward resilient and sustainable water management in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta

Sinking and shrinking, the Vietnamese Mekong Delta is a materialization of dynamic river flows, sediment flows, and coastline processes. Past policy aspirations and extensive water infrastructures have shaped the delta into one the most significant food producing landscapes in Southeast Asia. Yet, these changes have also created new environmental risks by transforming the hydrological system. Research has produced a growing and increasingly diverse empirical literature on the delta's environmental context, without necessarily providing water resource managers, policymakers and practitioners with the information needed to galvanize more resilient development. This focus review presents a detailed overview of the recent scientific findings, exploring how the management of water resources is changing, as well as their inter‐relationship with land use, policy, socio‐economic transitions, and global environmental crises. Compound and systemic risks to the delta include climate change, hydrometeorological hazards, upstream developments and an unsustainable development trajectory. We outline scientific knowledge gaps, as well as the pressing need for sharable analysis‐ready data and innovations.
