Clay‐sized Hf‐Nd‐Sr isotopic composition of Mongolian dust as a fingerprint for regional to hemispherical transport

Abstract: Hf‐Nd‐Sr isotopic fingerprinting has been employed as a powerful method for distinguishing dust sources. However, the Hf and Sr isotopic compositions of dust are highly dependent on particle size to accurately identify dust provenance. Here we compare the Hf‐Nd‐Sr isotopic compositions of clay‐sized fractions from dust sources (the Mongolian Plateau) to sinks (Beijing and Greenland). Our results document that clay‐sized Hf‐Nd‐Sr isotopic compositions of Mongolian dust are controlled by two isotopic/geochemical… Show more

“…The Sr‐Nd isotopic compositions of dust from the Miaoergou ice core and those from other central Asia regions are reported in Figure S4 and Text S1. [ Chen et al ., ; Rao et al ., ; Wu et al ., ; Xu et al ., , ; Zhao et al ., ]. In addition, back trajectory analysis of air masses also indicates that most trajectories at the Miaoergou site originate from the west (Figure ), supporting the Taklimakan provenance of the Miaoergou dust.…”

“…The Hf isotopic tracer has recently been used in dust source fingerprinting for marine sediments (e.g., Pettke et al, ), modern aerosols/soils (Aarons et al, ; Pourmand et al, ; Zhao et al, ) and dust in ice cores (Blakowski et al, ; Lupker et al, ; Újvári et al, ). Hafnium isotopic ratios do not seem to be affected by weak acetic acid applied in this study (Újvári et al, ), which is similar to Nd isotopes.…”

“…Hafnium isotopic ratios do not seem to be affected by weak acetic acid applied in this study (Újvári et al, ), which is similar to Nd isotopes. The 176 Hf/ 177 Hf isotopic compositions have an apparent grain size dependence: these are always more radiogenic in the fine fractions of dust/loess than in the bulk samples (Újvári et al, ; Zhao et al, ). Aerosol samples in dust plumes proved also to be more radiogenic in Hf with increasing distance from the source region (Aarons et al, ).…”
