Global trends and factors, such as the increased level of globalization, climate change, resource scarcity, and awareness of social and environmental responsibilities, as well as fiercer competition and lower profit margins in all industries, force organizations to act to retain, regain, or sustain their competitive advantages for long-term survival. These trends and factors are historically known to bring about innovations that drive the evolution of industries. Sustainability is considered to be such an innovation to achieve fiscally sound, environmentally conscious, and socially progressive organizations and supply chains. This study reviewed 477 past articles published in five major databases from 1990 to 2018. The purpose of the study was to assess the current state-of-the art in the subject of lean-driven sustainability. Based on the exhaustive descriptive and contextual analysis, synergies, divergences, and the extent of two-way permeability of lean and sustainability concepts from the perspective of intra-and inter-organizational operations were identified along with future research opportunities. Fundamental strengths and weaknesses of both concepts, existing strong synergies and untapped potential, along with their key contributors, the potential-use cases of lean tools to derive sustainable solutions are highlighted in this review.

This study investigates the determining factors that drive sustainable performance through the application of management lean methods in the primary production segment of the horticultural supply chain for apples and pears. The determining factors, identified through a systematic review of the available literature, are thematically synthesized, conceptually framed and utilized for the development of a case study. The single case study approach is utilized to develop a detailed and nuanced understanding of the context, evaluating the practices of 4 cooperative primary producers operating within a forward integrated supply chain. The study posits that the combination of climatic and biophysical dynamism inherent in the primary producer environment, in combination with the inflexibility of seasonal batch production, imposes itself as a key barrier to the imposition of pull and flow in the chain, the fundamental tenets of a lean system. A case is outlined where cold infrastructure is employed to break the inflexibility of supply whilst a process of forward contracting establishes fruit orders up to 1-year in advance, beyond the forthcoming annual cycle, functionally transforming fruit cultivation within the group from a "push" to a "pull" system of production. It is further highlighted that functional partitioning of the organizational-chain structure is necessary to isolate and mitigate the effects of contextual dynamism, whereby downstream chain structures purposed for agility and responsiveness serve as a protective buffer to lean focused grower operations. The findings reaffirm the positive relationship between the size of the grower operation, the capacitation of the workforce and the ability of the operation to attain superior lean driven performance outcomes. However, it is severally highlighted that horizontal cooperation between primary producers may help overcome the resource limitations of smaller growers. Data based decision controls are marked as being centrally important sustainable performance determinant, both at the level of the grower, in terms of orchard management and harvest process control, as well as at the level of the cooperative serving the needs of crop programming and practice benchmarking processes. This exposition of determining factors driving lean sustainable performance in horticultural primary production represents a new contribution to the body of literature linking lean and sustainable organizational performance. The study should support further development of lean management research and practiced lean methods within the agri-food context.

Na construção civil a metodologia lean, ou construção enxuta, visa maximizar o uso de materiais e aproveitar ao máximo a mão de obra disponível. Esta pesquisa adota o método de revisão sistemática ProKnow-C para identificar as ferramentas, as contribuições e as dificuldades encontradas pela indústria da construção civil no uso da metodologia lean. Tal método visa analisar um portfólio de artigos selecionados de forma a representar o estado da arte sobre o uso do lean na construção civil. A análise do portfólio foi realizada por meio de cinco lentes de pesquisa: as fontes de perda na construção civil, os obstáculos para a implementação da metodologia, as ferramentas utilizadas, as vantagens da implementação da metodologia e a análise quantitativa da melhora que a aplicação do lean gera na indústria da construção civil. Com a análise do portfólio concluiu-se que as fontes de perdas mais presentes são: retrabalho, execuções ineficientes e períodos de espera. Como barreiras para a aplicação da metodologia tem-se a falta de conhecimento do corpo técnico e a baixa comunicação entre as equipes. Dentre as ferramentas apresentadas as mais aplicadas são: sistema de gestão de qualidade total e adoção de sistemas de gestão visual. A adoção de tais ferramentas gera como vantagem da aplicação da metodologia o aumento da eficiência produtiva. Percebe-se também, a ausência de trabalhos científicos que retratem quantitativamente a melhora que a aplicação das ferramentas da metodologia lean trazem ao canteiro de obras, o que se apresenta como uma futura oportunidade de pesquisa.
